I am currently engaged in a Linux experiment. I have put Ubuntu linux on the computers of two people who have very little computer experience. They will both be family computers, one will see heavy iPod usage, the other will be used a lot for school work. My initial feedback is that it should work fine. People really could care less about what operating system is on their computer. I think that they are under the impression that it is somehow part of the computer. Like any other appliance, there is no distinction between the hardware and the software.
I think I will run into problems with a couple of things. One is dial up internet, the other is stupid web sites that only work with Internet Explorer. Ipods appear to work well, but not having access to the iTunes store could be a problem for one of the families. I'll keep you posted.
